Mental Health Professional
The Essentials of Healthcare Science course is the second CTAE pathway course that is a
part of the Georgia Department of Education Health Science Career Cluster, focusing on Mental
Health Professional. It serves as an anatomy-focused foundation for students exploring
healthcare careers. This course goes beyond basic career awareness to delve into human
anatomy and physiology, the structure and function of body systems, and how illnesses and
injuries affect those systems. Students learn medical terminology, study common diseases
and disorders, and examine concepts related to disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
By connecting technical science content to real clinical applications, students build a strong
base of knowledge and practical skills that support future coursework and careers in medicine,
nursing, allied health, and other healthcare-related sciences. Upon successful completion,
students are better prepared for advanced healthcare classes, postsecondary programs, and
industry-recognized certifications—strengthening both academic and career readiness. The next
step to complete the Healthcare Science pathway at South Forsyth is the Mental Health
Professional class.
The Mental Health Professional class prepares students to understand and support mental
wellness as part of holistic healthcare. While specific Mental Health Pathway standards in
SuitCASE are accessed via the Georgia Department of Education educator tools, they align with
statewide expectations for career and technical education by emphasizing knowledge of
behavioral health concepts, wellness strategies, and interpersonal skills necessary in
many health-related professions. This pathway typically covers topics such as emotional health,
stress management, communication strategies, ethical responsibilities, and the role of mental
health professionals in school, community, and clinical settings. Students interested in any type
of direct patient care, counseling, psychology, social work, and patient support functions develop
critical thinking, empathy, and foundational mental health literacy—skills that are
increasingly important in today’s healthcare environment, where physical and emotional
well-being are interconnected. This instructional offering gives students a comprehensive
introduction to human health, from biological systems and disease processes to emotional
and mental well-being, providing a solid springboard toward careers in healthcare science while
fostering both technical expertise and compassionate care.
This pathway also aligns with the Internship Forsyth Work-Based Learning initiative. Students
that are actively participating in the pathway can apply for opportunities to gain valuable work
experience in a healthcare setting in the surrounding community.
